Hints and Tips
From Fools And Heroes Wiki
- When starting a new character, consider buying a mace instead of a sword. They can affect a greater range of creatures and are slightly cheaper. The downside however is they're often difficult to wield effectively, and the range of things they effect isn't that great.
- Ranged weapon wise Bows are a bit pants to start off with, with most needing magical enhancements beyond the means of a starting character to really be of use.
- For beginning LARPers second hand shops are a great source of kit. Be on the look out for leathers you can alter or even clothing that has an old world feel.
- Charity shop fur can provide a cheap, if relatively weak armour for those unable to get leather straight away. Real fur's usually preferable to fake and tends to hold up better under stress.
- Don't go off on your own in hostile territory. The other players are likely not to find your character in time if you're taken down in combat, so most wounds become instant kills.
- Armour and weapons, magic and spells may save your life, but working with your fellow adventurers is even better. Talk to your fellows and find out what sort of abilities they have that may protect you. You may find there is much you can do to protect them in return, as well as curse their sudden but inevitable betrayal.
- Those who provide food for the party are often extremely popular. You can get away with many, many things if you have biscuits, rations or cakes.
- If you're using a shield, wear a helm as well if possible. If your head is all that's showing, it's likely to get hit more often.
- Don't have any armour? Crowan priests aren't allowed to wear it. This solution is short-term, however, like most Crowans.
- When playing a Kharachian character, play a mute.
- Useless in a fight? Vleyborians believe in the sanctity of life, and prefer to avoid hitting things where possible.
- When playing a night-site, warn people before lighting up. A party can become very frustrated when they simultaneously all lose their nightvision
- Attack priority - BAD GUY IN THE ROBES GETS IT FIRST!! A mage/priest can't cast if he hasn't got a face!
- If you are going to be a mage or priest make sure you learn how to read Ithronian. There is nothing worse than being handed a scroll and looking at it for 15mins before a scout translates it for you.
- If you are new to larp don't worry about fighting too much. There are plenty of non-combat/combat-light jobs that don't always need a lot of kit.
- If you are new to larp and want to play a fighter type, go scout. You don't need much armour and you get to run about like an idiot trying not to get killed (and take it from me it's fun).
- If you are new to larp and want to play a fighter type, go Mercenary. You don't need much armour to start with, and you should always be around people that will help you and heal you up later rather than dying in a bush.
- Combat skills aren't the be all and end all of Fools and Heroes. Practice make perfect and half of the time you'll be a monster, which gives you lots of time to practice fighting (and dying in fun and unusual ways).
- Attitude is everything - This is a game. Have fun and people will have fun with you. BUT be careful and listen to the refs. Above all else - HAVE FUN!
